Rocket league switch12/14/2023 ![]() Considering the wealth of iconic franchises at Nintendo’s disposal, I’d have liked to have seen more of these, but the unique sound and visual effects that complement each car are a fun addition. There are three exclusive Nintendo-themed cars, with Mario, Luigi and Samus all receiving their own vehicles. However, Psyonix has added some Switch-specific changes outside of making it portable. If you own Rocket League on a different platform and don’t really make much use of your Switch’s portability, then these downgrades mean that this isn’t a particularly enticing package outside of being able to play it on a train. Textures appear more blurred on your TV, while those jagged edges become more prominent and the cars can become a blur of primary colors. ![]() While the game still runs like a dream both in Handheld and Docked mode, its visual imperfections stand out more in the latter option. Also: The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Switch Review – Fus Ro Darn Good Game You can still play the game in Docked mode and hook up a Pro Controller, though obviously the main hook of Rocket League Switch is being able to play it on the go, so those with a more competitive edge may be left a little frustrated when doing so. Playing Rocket League on the Switch does have certain natural disadvantages, such as the Joy-Cons not exactly being a solid comparison to an Xbox One controller or Xbox 360 controller on PC, and I found myself faring much better when teaming up against other Switch players rather than those on different platforms. If you're interested in the Switch, here are some more articles you might enjoy.Rocket League Switch running at a solid 60 FPS makes these changes forgivable, and I have experienced zero frame dips while playing, which is hugely beneficial considering that Switch players will be in the same pool as Xbox One / PC players thanks to the game’s cross-play functionality. The undocked version has everything to offer players who want to play on the go. The docked version has nothing to offer people who already play the game. Panic Button’s port of Rocket League to the Switch is an excellent example of a game that supports this argument. I’ve argued that the Switch offers unique opportunities for developers and players if the console is thought of as a home for games that play much better undocked than docked as well as a platform that supports both modes equally well. This is especially true if you want to play with friends who play on PC or Xbox One because, unlike the PS4, the Switch supports cross-platform play. Undocked play is a very compelling reason to purchase the Switch version of the game. If you want to play Rocket League on the go, the Switch is the only game in town and its smooth 60 fps frame rate guarantees that all of Rocket League’s exhilarating gameplay can be held in your hand. There’s no point when you can have the same gameplay experience with much better graphics on the other platforms. ![]() There’s no reason to play Rocket League docked on the Switch if you already have the game on PC or console. Undocked play is more than worth the price of admission. Most of these problems and more are present when playing undocked, but they’re less noticeable on the Switch’s small screen. The low resolution, poor texture filtering, and the blurriness introduced by anti-aliasing are too much to ignore when playing Rocket League undocked on a large TV. The graphics metrics are better for docked play than undocked, but the difference in screen size between the two modes negates the docked advantage. The result is a sharper but flatter image with more pronounced jaggies. Anti-aliasing is absent in undocked mode as are all shadows. Docked mode includes post-processing anti-aliasing which smooths edges at the cost of a blurry image. Texture filtering is markedly curtailed in both docked and undocked modes. Split-screen undocked fell as low as 432p with Digital Foundry speculating that it might go lower. Moreover, the game uses dynamic resolution scaling to maintain its 60 fps frame rate with the result that resolution frequently falls below 720pĭigital Foundry reported resolution drops to 648p in single screen and 576p in split-screen during docked play. This is an immediate visual downgrade for docked mode where the Switch can produce 1080p. Rocket League targets 720p in both docked and undocked modes. The Switch’s hardware is just too limited to do both well. ![]() Rocket League’s excellent 60 fps performance comes at the cost of a serious visual downgrade.
